In the 1950s, the innovative architect and designer George Nelson became the company’s first Design Director. He was succeeded by Charles and Ray Eames, who designed a wide range of office and living furniture for Herman Miller that went down as classics in the history of design.

Concepts such as the action office, which 60 years ago already thought about what the collaboration of the future might look like, laid the foundation for a company that develops problem-solving designs that are both beautiful and useful. Nowadays Studio 7.5, Yves Behár or Kim Collins design the products.

Sustainability

Herman Miller recognized that the quality of human life depends on both economic vitality and a healthy environment. This is reflected in many ways: by participating in the Cradle to Cradle programme, a high recyclability of more than 90% for all products or using exclusively regenerative energies in the manufacturing process.

The DfE (Design for the Environment) protocol developed by Herman Miller prescribes a thorough examination with every new design. Among other things, the product life cycle or the chemical safety of the materials used are analysed and evaluated according to stricter criteria than in standard guidelines.

Awards

The best-selling product at Herman Miller is the Aeron Chair, which has become a style icon in modern offices. The office chair is on display in the permanent exhibition of the MoMa in New York. Moreover, it’s not only countless design awards that the company is proud of (among others, the Cosm won the TIME Top 100 Inventions and the iF World Design Award), for decades Herman Miller has also been recognized for its leading role in sustainability.
